there is a drop-down menu called "Open links in" just select "New tab"
Works for me. Using FF 3.5.1, FD 2.23b1

FF is set to open links in a new tab and switch to that tab immediately.
FD preferences are set to open links in a new tab, and FD selection 1
is set to Google.com with a shortcut key of Cntl+1. From any web page
I am viewing, pressing Cntl+1 opens Google in the current tab and not in
a new tab. Same results from the FD main page. The only time I get a
new tab is when I am viewing the FD main page and click on the Google
FD with the left or middle mouse button.
