fastdial hangs system
Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 01/23/2009 - 09:47
i'm using firefox 3.0.5, with fastdial 2.2b on winxp, 2.66ghz cpu, 512mb ram, with nvidia geforce 7100gs.
there's a very serius bug with fd. i've recreated it so many times that i can confidently say it's very serius.
by default fastdial captures a small thumbnail of the website added to any block. when a block is refreshed it takes a while for fastdial to capture the thumbnail. in the meantime, if any other block is right-clicked and any of the popup option is selected, fastdial totally hangs the system. firefox, startmenu, taskbar, system tray, the whole os itself. in one instance, i waited for about one half hour but the system remained hung, with absolutely no response, whatsoever, from keyboard or mouse. not even the taskmanager works. not even the best anticrash software - antifreeze! and this horrible bug not only exists in this beta version, but in all the previus versions too.
the image i've captured could only be done with a cam because of obvius reasons as above. so here's the link. sorry it's only 320x240 as my cell cam is capable only that much. but the bug is recognizable and anyone can recreate it with the steps i've pointed out above.

i'd request telega to rectify this soon before i switch my loyalty. i'm talking about speed dial. not only is it free of any bugs but also loads way faster than fast dial. the only thing speed dial doesn't have is drag'n drop, which telega wrongly claimed as 'faster drag and drop' in 2.22b. in my system, even if i use only fast dial as the addon, it still manages a huge 6sec for a drag'n drop to the adjacent block.
in anticipation of a speedy rectification, thanx in advance to telega.

Re: fastdial hangs system
Submitted by gEEkEr (not verified) on Sun, 01/25/2009 - 01:32i'm checking out now at a few of my acquaintances place to see if this bug repeats.
And what happened ?
as i said earlier, i'm able to reproduce it on any pc running windows 2k to windows vista, with firefox 2.x to 3.x, fastdial 1.89 to 2.22b.
i've got about 20 instances where this bug repeats on 20 different systems all in different os versions ranging from win2k to vista
Please could you clarify this statement.
i mean i've tried fastdial with firefox on systems where the os ranged from windows 2000 to windows vista. in some, firefox version was
2.0.0.x while in some it was the latest - 3.0.5. http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php
unfortunately, i've not been successful at recording the screen. the avi file comes out huge at over 10mb. meanwhile, i'm trying other options to see if i can make a video clip of the problem.

@Mafia_Penguin
definitely the problem's not there. but i can confidently say the problem doesn't occur because the submenu firefox> in the popup is absent. i don't know which version of fd is this. but in all versions of fd that i did check, the submenu in the popup appears as follows:
anyway, it seems that the problem on my side won't go. meanwhile i'm into debugging the xpi itself. let's see where it takes.
thanx for the help.

Submitted by telega on Sun, 01/25/2009 - 09:48@gEEkEr,
You said you tried FD version 1.89 and got the bug reproduced. "Firefox" submenu was introduced only starting from FD version 2.15, so it should not be the cause.
Also "Firefox" submenu had been removed starting from FD version 2.23b1.

That is not a reply to the question

So maybe two different Operating Systems ?
I am not sure why you are pursuing operating systems.
As others are not experiencing this problem for example on Windows 2000.
It serves absolutely no purpose to change the OS, as this has not been established as the cause.
---
as i said earlier, i'm able to reproduce ..., with firefox 2.x to 3.x, fastdial 1.89 to 2.22b.
Able to reproduce what ?
Do you really believe that there has been a bug that nobody else has noticed through all these different Versions, and that you have just discovered it ?
---
i don't know which version of fd is this. but in all versions of fd that i did check, the submenu in the popup appears as follows:
OK so that means you have been looking at recent Versions, but not the latest which does not include Firefox in the Menu
---
I am not sure why you are pursuing different Versions of Fast Dial, as what you are experiencing is not a generally experienced bug in any Version of Fast Dial. We might as well concenrate on Version 2.22b.
---
Just keep to Windows 2000, if you have it, with Firefox 3.0.5. running 2.22b.
That will be fine as I can reproduce.
---
I am unable to reproduce your problem so far by altering Firefox settings. Have you any unusual settings ?
---
What Version of Java do you have installed ?
---
Do you have some Windows program running like a Firewall, that you could try to temporarily disable.
---
Do you have any other invasive software running in Windows.
---
For we have established that this problem exists for you in Firefox 3.0.5 in a New Profile in Windows 2000, running 2.22b, with no other extensions loaded, is that correct ?
---
I can confirm this end that no problem exists at all using Firefox 3.0.5, in Windows 2000, running 2.22b.
---
So we have to eliminate further causes one by one.
---
And the problem is as you describe it that if you click on Add and then Bookmark , that the system Freezes ( and also with Sort and Firefox).
But Add will do fine for testing purposes.
I will test with Add

Submitted by Mafia_Penguin on Sun, 01/25/2009 - 15:59I use Fast Dial 2.23b1 from http://telega.phpnet.us.
I like to test new versions of Fast Dial because if there is a huge problem that causes UL to go down after too much traffic, I'll beat the crowd, thus saving my logos.

I use Fast Dial 2.23b1
I use the same Version.
But if there is a suggested bug it is simpler to keep to one Version of Fast Dial, One Version of Firefox, and ideally one Operating System.
In that way there are not too many variables :-)
Many thanks

you're right, the submenu firefox> isn't there before v2.15. i'm sorry for the slip. i guess i couldn't quite gather what my friends reported to me.
but each one of our systems froze when we selected the submenu with options say add> or sort>, or even firefox>. the fact of using many
operating systems is our team gets to do what each one has mastered. for instance, i know xp way better than i know win2000 or vista.
likewise two in our team have very good knowledge of windows 2000. while four others have been using vista for sometime now.
anyway, i can vouch that fd does freeze the system, at least versions 1.89 to 2.22b. i'm sure i'm getting close to the problem, which seems
to have to do with the settings. so i'll post if i chance upon something.
thanx for the insights.

I should just keep to 2.22b in 3.0.5 if you can.
There has to be a reason.
See if there is anything in common between you and other users.
Many thanks
