To get rid of that white flash when opening a new tab just use stylish or greasemonkey to install "about:blank black". The about:blank page is what gives that white flash right before fast dial loads. If you don't want to install the stylish addon you can also change the about:blank color through user-content.ccs, just google about:blank color for an explanation on that. I hope this helps someone, because that white flash was driving me crazy especially late night with dark themes.

On my system this has the effect of making the Fast Dial Tab background also black.

Is this the same for you ?

The Style Midnight Surfing Global Dark Style has the same effect

just go to the preferences and then page at the bottom you change change it to whatever color or picture you want.

im not sure what you mean goes black. when i open a new tab it flashes black for a split second then the fast dial comes up with whatever color or picture background i have set.

I will examine

with the css of the style clearly having

background: #000000!Important;

one could expect the background to be black in Fast Dial

On the style itself is this image of a new tab

both with and without the style.
The page is clearly shown as nova aba which is portuguese for New Tab.

I wonder what is causing this difference in behaviour.

It would seem on more recent Versions of Fast Dial /Firefox the Fast Dial background is not affected, echoing your observations

It seems however that earlier Versions of Fast Dial/Firefox are effected by the darkening of the Fast Dial background.
