All this suggests that an uninstall Fast Dial, Restart Firefox, Install Fast Dial, restart Firefox might have cleared.
With of course a little Fast Dial make Home thrown in for good measure..

This might shed a little light on the problem:
When I installed this extension,
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/777/
everything seems to work now (fastdial opening in a new tab in FF4b7).
You'll need to turn off extension compatibility checking to install the extension.
Just open:
about:config
Right-Click
New > Boolean
extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0
False
Just thought I would share with those having problems.

I myself don't have a problem in FFv3 loading FastDial in new tabs (as I have the box checked). I do however have a problem in FFv4. That box is checked and still no FastDial in new tabs until I installed that third-party extension.
