“Slow Dial” more like! (I have 3 complaints)

Nearly There —Fri, 08/08/2008 - 17:04

I do love the idea of Fast Dial, in theory — but is it supposed to be so slow?

For me, it takes about 6 seconds for Fast Dial to appear the first time I open a blank tab. After that, it takes about 3 seconds. (This seems to be regardless of how many, or few, sites I have set up on it.)

But isn’t the point of Fast Dial to save you time by giving you quick access to all your favourite sites? Waiting for it to load seems to kinda defeat the object.

Other issues I have…

I found it extremely annoying how the default keyboard shortcut is Alt+numpad. Every time I tried typing any text (like, an apostrophe, using Alt+0146 — or a dash, using Alt+0151), Fast Dial would send me to another website. It took me ages to figure out what was going on. This must be stopped!

Another big problem I have is that you can’t simply add bookmarks to Fast Dial (either by dragging them, or by selecting them from some kind of list), so adding sites is very cumbersome as you have to manually type all the URLs in yourself. IF you right click a bookmark, there is an option that says "add to Fast Dial", but this doesn’t seem to do anything.

These issues aside, it seems like a good add-on. I just really wish it would load a bit faster.

Try to right-click the link and choose "Save As". Or try installing from http://telega.phpnet.us/fastdial/ .

Firefox could not install the file at

http://telega.phpnet.us/download/fastdial.2.1.xpi

because: Unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console log for more details.

My FastDial 1.90 Takes about 1-2 seconds to load. It has 14 Thumbnails and I have a dual core with vista, I'm gonna try 2.1 though...

Chiaroscuro,

> If it was you, you can always go back to an earlier post and Edit it.

I believe I can only edit my last post, so it’s too late to change that older one, now. (But yes, that post was mine.)

>Did you restart Firefox each and every time that you re-enabled an Extension ?
This is absolutely necessary.

Yes, I did this.

> when you enable each extension one by one, there will hopefully be one extension that will suddenly cause your slow behaviour in Fast Dial.

Unfortunately, this didn’t show me which add-on was the conflict. I turned them all back on, one by one, and by the end Fast Dial was still working fine.

However, since then (several days ago) I have noticed that Fast Dial is always slow again after a PC restart. It also slows down after I have left my browser for a while and come back to it.

All the icons appear one by one (taking about half a second each) and while they are generating, I can’t click on a bookmark — and I can’t even click on any of the Fast Dial thumbnails!

> Top suspect is Firebug so I would try enabling that first if you are running it.

I’m not a Web developer, so I have no need for Firebug! :D

> It would be interesting to know what Extensions you are running.

I use the following:

Adblock Plus
All-in-One Sidebar
Autohide
BatchDownload
Dictionary Tooltip
DownThemAll!
EZNav
Fast Dial
Fission
Flagfox
Google Toolbar for Firefox
GooglePreview
ImageZoom
Locationbar²
MileWideBack
NoScript
Personal Menu
Tab Mix plus
Thumbs
Tree Style Tab

> If you can find the time to work through your extensions one by one and manage to find the Extension that is causing this slowness then this will be an extremely valuable discovery.

When I get the chance, I will really try and find out. As I have 21 add-ons, it will take me probably 4 or 5 computer restarts to locate the incompatible add-on, which will take ages. But I will try it some time soon.

> If you do discover the culprit, please do not delete the Extension immediately as it might prove important to know exactly which Build Version it is.

OK. Will do!

@Nearly There

Thanks for your most informative reply.
And for also for the Extension list.
This is most helpful.

It would appear then for the moment that the cause of your slow behaviour in Fast Dial remains quite unclear.

---------------------------------------------------------

As a matter of interest do you store your cell images as URLs or are they stored on the hard disk ?

--------------------------------------------------------

For your interest I came across a list of Problematic Firefox Extensions here

It is interesting to see that Downthemall is described as causing slowness.

I wonder if NoScript is creating Memory problems.

Your "It also slows down after I have left my browser for a while and come back to it" sounds like "Memory leak".
---------------------------------------------------------

If you manage to establish that Adblock Plus is causing your slowness we could try Mafi0z idea of setting up an exception rule in Adblock Plus for the Fast Dial page.

I have DownThemAll and AdBlockPlus along with Fast Dial 2.10 and I timed my fast Dial Loading time, and it's under a second.

I have 5x3 cells with one of them empty, and no folders. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium, and have a dual core and 2046MB of RAM.

Would you mind telling us a little about your computer?

@Nearly There

There are so many confusing tales of slowness

These are from Mozilla
Possibly both Ver FD 1.90

Sloooooww in FF3

Something happened with Fast Dial in FF 3. It was just fine with FF 2. Then I upgraded to FF 3 and now it loads the images very slowly. It is not refresh the images that is making it slow. It is just displaying the because the images that are being used are old. I don't have many addons and the ones I do have I seriously doubt are messing it up. Seems like a few other people are having the same problem. I really like Fast Dial but this needs to be fixed. I am running the current addons:

adblockplus
add n edit cookies
bbcode
colorfultabs
delicious bookmarks
fast dial
firebug - turned off
google toolbar
opensearchfox
searchstatus
SEO for firefox - turned off
Tamper data - turned off
Web Developer
Word Count plus

When I say turned off I do NOT mean disabled. I guess I have quite a few addons but everything was working fine in FF 2.

Too slow....

Great idea, but currently takes 30 seconds+ to load up on my machine, interferes with other tabs loading, etc. I have a very fast machine, but this add-on makes firefox unusable for me on Ubuntu 8.04.

But then you have this:
Firefox Loading extremely Slow w/o any Extensions
It is a long post (10 pages) but interesting.
There are a number of tips. You may find something useful.

There seem to be many people all asking similar sorts of questions.

Found a conflict with "Domain Details 2.3".

Fast dial has become very very slow following an update from several modules.

Disabling and enabling one by one, I found Domain Details to be the cause.

(ff frozen for several seconds at each page change)
