When I say cell, I don't mean that location, I mean the cell that the url was assigned to. If you move the cell around it is still that same cell. Its like moving a shortcut around on your desktop. The shortcut is in a different location but it still points to the same thing... You succeeded in reassigning your shortcut because we most likely have different circumstances.
I had (I finally found a work around which I will explain in a bit) a glitch that prevented a certain shortcut from working because a previous cell had been assigned that shortcut and the shortcut never was cleared even though that cell had been cleared from fast dial (or cleared from the blank page at least), resulting in the inability to reassign another cell to that shortcut.
That said, here is the work around. Multiple cells can in fact be assigned the same shortcut. But fast dial gives precedence to the cell that was created the latest so all I had to do is create a new cell and assign it the "unassignable" shortcut.
My problem was (and actually still is) that there is an invisible cell somewhere that is still utilizing that shortcut.
Actually you had answered one of my other questions that I did not voice. I had recently reinstalled firefox and had backed up my add-ons which included fast dial. When I reloaded the backed up add-ons, all of my other add-ons had lost all of its data except for fast dial, which retained the cells in the blank page and all of the shortcuts. I had wondered about that but you answered my unasked question when you told me that the data was stored in the bookmarks as I had backed that up and reloaded it as well. It seems that the invisible cell had carried over from the previous installation of firefox and, when I reloaded the bookmarks firefox loaded this invisible cell later giving it more priority over the other cells that I had so I couldn't assign any of the existing cells to that shortcut. So all I have to do is create a new cell and that new cell can override the invisible cell as the new cell was created later, giving it more priority.
Problem Solved!
Thank you chiaroscuro for all of your help in resolving this matter. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.
Ahh, we're posting at the same time!!! To answer your last question, no. I no longer have the cell which points to the "unassignable", and unclearable shortcut so I can't change the url in that cell.
And we still can't clear the URLs!!! But at least I found a way to use the shortcuts... Again thanks for your time and efforts. The only way to clear the shortcut that I can't assign to anything (other than newer cells) we will have to find and delete that invisible cell (its there it just doesn't show up on the blank page).

I remain unclear still if shortcuts are assigned to cells or to URLs
http://userlogos.org/node/5563
Should be easy enough to test though
Assign shortcuts and then move cells around.
Have you tried ?
If what you say is correct, and it may well be, how is it that I had success re-assigniing a shortcut ?
Have you tried with the cell/url you mention, saving both cells with no shortcut assigned, or if you prefer simply deleting the cell ?
Does this free the shortcut for further use ?
Many thanks
Re: Clearing Shortcut Keys
Submitted by chiaroscuro on Sat, 10/31/2009 - 01:03Have done a small test -
The shortcut is definitely linked to cell/url and not to cell position.
Now need to change URL and see if shortcut continues to work with new URL.
Then testing is over

You are right.
shortcut is linked to cell and not to URL
change only the URL in a cell and the shortcut will then work for the new URL.
I still do not accept that we cannot find a way to clear any shortcut !
If you want to assign a shortcut to a new URL then surely you could change the URL field in the cell like I have done ?
Many thanks

Submitted by chiaroscuro on Sat, 10/31/2009 - 01:23I am glad that you have found some sort of solution.
I have to admit though that your:
so all I had to do is create a new cell and assign it the "unassignable" shortcut.
is sort of contradictory ! :-)
I am glad anyhow that we have managed to kick this around a bit and that you have got part of the way in making your Fast Dial work like you want.
Many thanks
