Simple Mail - Email messages randomly deleted

Twice now Simple Mail has deleted everything in my inbox and everything placed in other folders via filters.
If I had elected to delete messages from server this would have constituted a disaster.
btw
any idea why I'm having to use ie to make text legibly rendered?

Submitted by telega on Thu, 04/30/2009 - 05:08Messages could disappear if you're using IMAP mailbox and server returns zero messages in your inbox. When using IMAP, Simple Mail synchronizes its data with server inbox, thus deleting locally messages that no more exist on server.

I didn't set it to IMAP.
But IMAP was the answer.

In the other matter
I mean that in Firefox I see strange symbols instead of recognisable alphabet representation
and was therefor forced to use the non-compliant browser.
It occasionally happens (various sites always show up in this odd way in Firefox.
When it happens I ask if anybody knows why because I can't figure it out.
Nobody, so far, knows.
