Making themes in Fast Dial
chiaroscuro Sun, 12/28/2008 - 18:34
I am interested to know how other users approach the question of making Themes from user settings in Fast Dial.
---
It seems to me that it is useful to have a way of retaining all one's user appearance settings (besides background) so that one can make a new theme easily without having to re-enter one's own settings each time in None, which has default settings.
So what I have done is to set up all my personal settings in Default (without setting a background) and then save those settings as a theme called Template.
In that way when I want to make a new Theme, I just go to Template and simply load a new Background and "save as" the name of the background, in my Themes file on the Hard Disk.
Then I immediately import the named Theme that I have just made, and also import Template so that it erases the modified Version in Fast Dial.
---
I am interested to know how other users resolve this particular question, and would be interest to hear other suggestions related to making Preferences themes in Fast Dial
Many thanks

In another post I have suggested a possible modification to Fast Dial that could make the use of Template.zip no longer necessary.

Good.. thanks.
I am surprised though, I thought you would been enjoying this. :-)
I find Themes really a great addition to Fast Dial.
I have about 8 Themes at the moment.
It is just great to be able to alter one's Fast Dial page, according to one's mood, in just an instant in Themes.
Interested to hear how you get on....

Instead of typing in PM, this time i will reply here.

I do understand what you are using template.zip for. That is obvious from your post.
But we see themes completely differently.
You use themes as nothing more than a "quick background switcher".
I see themes as serving a greater purpose.. They store all that css for a reason. To not only switch background, but to be able to change the look of one's entire FD in a matter of seconds.
This is why in my PM i stated that a template.zip would not serve much purpose.

No problem
Please do not feel not obliged to use template.zip :-)
I think however for some users it may be quite convenient. if one is making a series of Themes using similar Preference/Options settings
Many thanks

It would be nice, if in the future the whole themes idea could be expanded to cover the whole page, so you could export links, icons, the lot. I mean it would be awesome to be able to switch pages like this...
...at the click of a mouse.
It's just a thought.
