Fast Dial 2.22 does not add a Search engine, rather it uses the settings in Firefox Web Search, just change it from Ask to Google and all should be fine.
Also check Firefox .... Tools / Add-ons ..... check if you have Ask toolbar for Firefox installed, if so either disable or uninstall it. This add-on can get installed in a number of ways either directly by yourself, or as an addition to a 3rd party program. i.e. PDF viewer FoxItReader v3 includes this, fortunately the toolbar is easily disabled or removed.
Also worth checking in Firefox Tools / Options / Advanced / update (tab) / ...... and set ......... Automatically check for updates to: Search Engines.
Note: Fast Dial 2.23b1 Multiple search buttons possible, Search function does not yet work, Fast Dial icon does not change when new search engine selected (known bug).
However, if as Tangram suggests, some other element is overiding your settings, then let us hope his advice will resolve this problem for you.

Will be good when this is up and running.
Been a while now...

I would like to have google as my default search engine in Fast Dial, but everytime i restat firefox, Fast Dial turn it back to Ask.
Maybe you have already tried this, but you may find the Search Bar Manager useful for removing unwanted Search Engines
