Fast Dial not opening in new tab (Firefox 4.0b1)

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; en-US; rv:2.0b1) Gecko/20100630 Firefox/4.0b1
Fast Dial 2.23b2 and 2.23b1
When opening a new tab it's blank — no Fast Dial though it is enabled.
Navigating to about:blank results in the same thing: the page is really blank.
chrome://fastdial/content/fastdial.html works fine so it seems to be a problem with new tab handler.
P.S. One more trouble:

Quick fix suggested by kirrun
In
Firefox/Tools/Options/General
When Firefox opens:
show my home page
set home page as:
chrome://fastdial/content/fastdial.html
This will open firefox in Fast dial on Firefox startup
It also has to be said that clicking on the fast dial icon in the toolbar also works fine for opening fast dial.
deleting the last tab does not open fast dial unfortunately.
To return tabs to their original position at the bottom of firefox (as it was before), just right click on the toolbar and deselect tabs at the top
obviously not very satisfactory.
I suppose the good news is that Fast Dial is there.
The bad news is that it would seem that Firefox is not handling tabs in the same way that it has been in the past, but the cause may be in fact elsewhere
I will continue to post updates in this thread
sincere thanks to kirrun for opening this thread and for coming up with all the solutions :-)
Re: Fast Dial not opening in new tab (Firefox 4.0b1)
Submitted by kirrun on Thu, 07/22/2010 - 21:49What is the fix you are talking about? Setting chrome://fastdial/content/fastdial.html as homepage and clicking “home” every time I need Fast Dial? That's exactly what I did when noticed that chrome://fastdial/content/fastdial.html is working.
If Firefox could load homepage in every new tab, that would be just what I need! But it can't.
So the only solution is to fix the way Fast Dial “catches” the event of opening new tab and loads itself there. BTW I'm still a bit confused with Fast Dial source code as it seems to me that initialising (setting handlers to catch new tabs) is done correctly. Maybe some other part of code throws exception and the whole things isn't working because of that. I'll have to go through Mozilla's Addons Development guides to understand how everything works inside.

Simply what I mean is that by doing what you suggested earlier in the thread enables one to get Firefox to open in Fast Dial on startup (rather than a blank tab)
I guess it addresses your earlier
When opening a new tab it's blank — no Fast Dial though it is enabled
I suppose more correctly this could be termed a work around rather than a fix. :-)
Yes History/home also seems to work as you said to open fast dial.
although clicking on the fast dial icon is possibly easier
CTRL-T brings up this annoying New Tab (so called in the tab) but which does not as you say bring up the home page if set to about:blank
But if home page is set to google.com then CTRL-T works fine.
As there is it seems the option to click on the Fast Dial icon on the toolbar at any time to open fast dial, and this works, maybe this is a more elegant way or certainly an alternative way of accessing fast dial for the moment in FF 4.0

Many thanks :-)
in the meanwhile I have approached mozilla
1 to see if this is a bug in this version of Firefox
2 to give more information on what changes have occurred to create this problem

Yes maybe.
I notice two errors appearing in the Error console both related to extensions manager
Please see also details of one of the errors below.

This might shed a little light on the problem:
When I installed this extension,
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/777/
everything seems to work now (fastdial opening in a new tab in FF4b7).
You'll need to turn off extension compatibility checking to install the extension.
Just open:
about:config
Right-Click
New > Boolean
extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0
False
Just thought I would share with those having problems.
