How do I transfer only my Fast Dial tab with icons and bookmarks to a new laptop?
I would like to transfer my Fast Dial tab to a new laptop without having to transfer an entire profile. The new laptop has already got Firefox 3.6 with the theme and extensions I would like. The only missing piece is my Fast Dial tab with its icons and bookmarks/links.
Has anyone done this successfully? And if so, how can this be done?
I know how to backup the bookmarks but to recreate the same Fast Dial tab with the icons etc, this is where I get stuck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is not a perfect answer to your question...
Obviously the easiest way is (and you don't want to do it) save the present profile with FEBE and reload in the new machine.
Then simply delete all you don't want in the new profile
Fast Dial information is stored in places.sqlite, which is the whole of Bookmarks.
You can save bookmarks in your present machine and then load bookmarks to your new machine.
The downside of this is that it will erase all the present bookmarks in your new machine.
However all bookmarks in the cells and all the logos in Fast Dial will be restored.
Only the background and back-cell logo (if changed) will be need to be reloaded.
However on loading of Fast Dial, I think it is a good idea to go to the fast dial folder in bookmarks menu and with right click, fast dial make home
and restart firefox.
It was only in the very early versions of fast dial when fast dial saved to a squlite file that was separate from firefox bookmarks, that it was possible to do exactly what you want to do.
I hope this is of some help

With some further research I have read on the net that the following may work ...
1. Create a new Firefox profile on the new machine using: Run | firefox -p
2. Create a full profile backup of the desired profile on the old machine
3. Restore the backed up profile on the new machine using the new profile created in Step 1
Any insight you may be able to provide about restoring Fast Dial using this process would be very much appreciated.
Thanks again,
martin

(Although I usually use firefox.exe -p)
For profile backups there is nothing better/simpler than FEBE.
You can even create a new Profile in FEBE when restoring which saves going to Profile Manager to create a new Profile.
The only thing to realise with FEBE is that you cannot restore to the Profile that you are in.
So you would need to have FEBE running in one profile and restore to another profile.
viz your
3. Restore the backed up profile on the new machine using the new profile created in Step 1
If you follow the instructions here you should manage easy enough.
Backing up to a removable media might simplify your task.
Don't forget that FEBE is also saving and restoring all the bookmarks as well
Let me know how you get on....

Submitted by febyjj on Thu, 05/20/2010 - 10:491. Install FD in your laptop.
2. Export the bookmark from FF in your pc in html format.
3. Cut and paste the bookmark in html format, to the laptop.
4. Import the bookmark into FF in laptop.
There will be 2 FD folders - one of them will be empty
5. Open bookmarks in laptop FF and delete the
empty Fastdial folder.
Try this and if you succeed, please post it so that others can benefit.

Submitted by febyjj on Thu, 05/20/2010 - 11:56One more method.
1. In PC open FF
2. Click on Bookmarks
3. Right-click on the fastdial folder and a box will open
4. On the bottom hover on Fast Dial and click Export
5. Give a filename and save the file (it will have .json extension)
6. Copy this file to laptop
7. Import it to FF bookmarks by repeating the steps from 2
at step 4 just click on Import instead of export and you are
done.

Backing up and restoring bookmarks (places.sqlite) using the two built in methods available in Firefox that you describe was always an available option
many thanks
