Thank you for your feedback
I have been asking myself if this/your solution would work.
A number of users had been saying that all their bookmarks had ended up in the unsorted Folder.
There are also users who had copied all their bookmarks from unsorted to the Fast Dial Folder.
Did you find that all your cells were in the right place ?
What is the name now of the Folder in the tab ?
I am most interested by your solution as it suggests in fact that the main error is that the make home page has been changed and that is all, and that there is no need to restore bookmarks at all
Many thanks

Tab used to just read "Fast Dial", now reads "chrome://fastdial/content/fastdial.html"
On a side note, I can no longer add new bookmarks to my fast dial page. Couldn't do it before I fixed it either.
Had just a blank page, hoped maybe just the icons got messed up but links would still work. Nope.
Whatever, figured I'd just add my shortcuts back to page.
Right click / preferences / unchecked Hide empty cells. Same number of empty cells, same settings.
Went to web page, right click on page, Add to Fast Dial, nothing.
Got my cells back to normal with above fix, still cant add new bookmarks by right click on web page.
Tried to add new by clicking on empty cell and adding url, still nothing. (Delete, edit, refresh buttons don't show up on empty cell either).

Mmmmm
This is difficult to advise from a distance.
I would recommend that you go to Bookmarks/Organise Bookmarks and have a look and try and understand what is happening, by looking at the contents of the different Folders
It is possible that when you are adding to Fast Dial the bookmarks are going to the/a Fast Dial Folder in Bookmarks.
(So maybe making Unsorted Bookmarks Home is not such a good idea after all. We will have to see)
All this we should be able to verify.
One user has recommended copying all the bookmarks from Unsorted Bookmarks and putting them in the Fast Dial Folder.
Of course if you do that make Fast Dial Folder Home as well.
That may resolve this adding bookmarks problem
The details to this method are here
I have never been able to reproduce this problem, so I can only try to understand what is happening from what you tell me.
It may interest you also to see the other recovery options, particularly the restoring of Bookmarks.
Please see here
But as you are acquainted with the unsorted Bookmarks question, perhaps the first mentioned method above may be preferable to you
Please stay in touch and let me know how you get on.
Many thanks

Could neither rename nor delete the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder. Been using Xmarks to back up my bookmarks for a long time. Saved my butt more than once.

Good news !
Thanks for letting me know
So you have confirmed that making unsorted Bookmarks home is not the solution.
Thanks for that
Could neither rename nor delete the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder.
Yes I guess one could expect that
Been using Xmarks to back up my bookmarks for a long time. Saved my butt more than once.
Yes this is an advantage of using Xmarks.
FEBE is also very good for making backups
Apart from using Xmarks is there anything unusual about your Fast Dial Settings.
For example what was your Sort setting - None ?
I would like to be able to reproduce this problem, and my feeling is there must be a causative element somewhere.
A number of users have been using Xmarks, but I don't think all
Maybe this Xmarks post related to this problem would interest you
Many thanks

Submitted by Bob Bismal (not verified) on Mon, 07/27/2009 - 17:44Sort setting, none. Never saw that before, but now that you mention it, it's pretty cool. I've got four PC's all set up the same, this only happened to one of them. I've got all the same add-ons on all of them. Only difference is Vista on the one it happened to.

Thanks for your reply and the information
I am not running Vista, so that may not be the cause.
I have managed to reproduce at last !
But not on purpose. :-)
As you said everything in Fast Dial goes to Unsorted Bookmarks
And maybe Fast Dial takes all of Unsorted Bookmarks.
Most strange
This happened after I had set open in new tab (which I always have) to open in current tab in Fast Dial.
This might have just been a coincidence.
But I have a feeling that a Fast Dial setting may be causing this problem to arise.
What I wonder is your "open in" setting in Fast Dial ?
I had a good Profile backup in FEBE, which I have restored.
So I am using that.
I am going to keep the trashed Profile/Bookmarks for Reference.
I have even backed it up the trashed Profile, so that I can keep restoring it to try out different things.
I wonder if this problem is being caused by a new Firefox 3.5. Feature which is called detach and tear off tab.
There is even an Extension which disables this function see here
It has a great name
bug489729 (Disable detach and tear off tab) 1.3
Many thanks

Submitted by Bob Bismal (not verified) on Mon, 07/27/2009 - 23:58I've always had it set to open in new tab.
Haven't had any new updates in the past week. Problem started yesterday. Strange.
