Bookmarks out of control & multiplying

bluedog —Fri, 09/05/2008 - 21:07

I'm using Fast Dial v2.1 in FF3 and am having a problem taming my bookmarks.

When I first started using FD2.1, I had a number of sites saved on the front page from when I was using the previous version. After looking at some tutorials on the FD site, I worked out what to do and wanted to change the structure/layout of my FD home page I created some home pages based on topics (eg Firefox, Tech Support, Favourites, etc) with the intention of adding bookmarks to those folders (via the FF Bookmarks menu) so that when I click on say,' Firefox' on my FD home page, all my firefox bookmarks are revealed in thumbnails on the next page.

I'm having a couple of problems, but the main one is that the bookmarks that were originally on my FD home page keep multiplying every time I restart FF and it doesn't seem to matter what I do when I organise them, I can't seem to get them to either remain deleted or stay where I move them to. This doesn't happen with any other bookmarks I have saved since using FD2.1 - just the ones I had from the previous version.

When I go into 'Organise Bookmarks', in my Fast Dial Folder in FF Bookmarks, I have 4 sub-folders which are repeated in sequence below each other 35 times (x4 = 140) folders. I can delete them now (again!) but next time I restart FF they will be back. As they insist on showing up in the same order, any new folders I create are saved after them so they never show up on my FD home page.

I have spent hours looking through the FD forum and FAQ's and have tried many of the suggestions I've seen like clearing the cache, etc but nothing so far has resulted in a permanent solution.

Any help with this frustrating problem would be greatly appreciated.

@bluedog

Your question has been noted and will be dealt with.
So do not despair.
There is no need to open more posts on the subject.
We don't want your posts multiplying like your bookmarks. :-)

Sounds like your transition from Fast Dial 1.x to Fast Dial 2.x has not been an easy one.

There have been no other reports of a similar problem.

Thank you chiaroscuro - you are a life saver! Don't worry - knowing you are investigating my problem is great news, so I won't be giving you any more headaches about my multiplying bookmarks :-)

@bluedog

Good to hear back from you.

Listen, it has to be admitted that it is not at all clear what might be happening your end.

It can only presumed that something perhaps went very wrong when you made the changeover to Fast Dial 2.x

The suggestion is this, which is basically to start again.
This is not very good for you as it means deleting everything.

1.Backup your present bookmarks.
2.Delete your present Fast Dial Folder in Bookmarks
3 Backup your Fast Dial Folder in your current Firefox profile.
4. Delete your Fast Dial Folder in your current Firefox Profile.
5.Restart Firefox.

This will mean that you will now have deleted all your previous Fast Dial 1.x settings as well as your present Fast Dial 2.x settings.

(Although you have made backups of both)

Hopefully this will restore things to normal.

----------------------------------

If you do the above you should have a completely new and empty Fast Dial Folder in Bookmarks and your Fast Dial Pages should also be empty.

Try then and start to load files into Fast Dial using the method described here:
Adding Sites/Cells to Fast Dial

If you find that you are still encountering problems please get back to us.

----------------------------------------------

Should you wish to try and and salvage your Fast Dial settings from when you were using Fast Dial 1.x you could do the following instead:

How to return to Fast Dial 1.x after running Fast Dial 2.x n/a

But from what you said, it would appear that you wanted to have a new Fast Dial layout anyhow.
There is also the very strong possibility that your fastdial.sqlite.bak file is corrupted, so proceeding in this direction might well bring further difficulties.
In the circumstances this route is not to be recommended.

Thanks for such a comprehensive reply chiaroscuro - very helpful. Will do as you suggest and reinstall FD2 after backing up bookmarks. I agree with you that going back to FD1 is probably not such a good idea.

Don't have time to do it just now but will let you know how I go when I do.

I too have the same problem with a couple of added twists. If I re-organize the FD tab by dragging and dropping thumbnails where I like them it does not survive a shutdown-restart of FF3. If I go to "Organize Bookmarks" and reorganize the FF folder it will survive the shutdown/restart cycle. It was there (organize bookmarks) that I discovered multiple entries of the same URLs. (sigh)

I'll try your solution above. Fingers crossed.

@don

As solutions go, it is a little on the crude side.

I wish you luck anyhow.

I had the same problem. The duplication problem seems to exist when you update FD 1.x to 2.x

Chiaroscuro's solution seems to work (deleting everthing and setting up FD 2.x again). But the problem in that is you'll have to bookmark everything and garnish FD from scratch.

I agree completely.
It is a most unsatisfactory way of dealing with this problem.

Is it possible that anyone encountering this difficulty could see if they are getting any errors, as this might help solve the problem which is otherwise difficult to reproduce.

See:
Using the Error Console

Agree with chiaroscuro, checking Error Console might shed some light on the problem.

UPDATE: Also you can search for fastdial.sqlite file in your Firefox profile and send it to me to telega gmail com, I can try to fix the problem.
