FireFox 3.5.2 & FastDial 2.23b1 seem to not like each other

at_jazz —Sat, 08/29/2009 - 15:20

Every so often FD & FF manage to deploy updates that DO NOT work well together. This seems to be the case (with me, at least... actual mileage may vary) with the latest updates for each. FF3.5.2 & FD 2.23b1, and now I have NO control over ANY changes to my bookmarks. Any changes I make revert back to what they were PRIOR to updating to FF3.5.2 & FD 2.23b1 upon restart. Changes to properties, as well. Also, changes to the placement of bookmarks is broken in that they will NOT go where I try to place them.

FTR, my FF prompted an update to 3.5.2 from 3.5.1 (which had it's OWN issues with fastdial, if I remember, but I do not remember WHICH ver of FD it had problems with), after the restart, when it looks for updates to add-ons, it prompted to update FD which, I apparently incorrectly assumed was an update to address potential incompatibilities between FF3.5.2 and whatever version of FD predated 2.23b1, so I let it update. After another restart I went in to do a little bookmark maintenance and discovered the above mentioned issue.

So, when you guys gonna fix/update the problem away?

Too late! Leap of faith and I shut 'er down and brought it back up again. You were right about the "title" being a preference setting. The "favicon" boxes apparently became unchecked with the upgrade. The ONLY remaining issue seems to be (as soon as I type it I'm sure something else will rear its' fugly head) that it still drops moved tiles to the spot immediately below where I "drop" them.

If it still persists, tomorrow, I will try that screentoaster site I saw linked, on here, and show you what it's doing. Fpr now, I'm done. It's late and I have to get up very early.

OK fine

We can continue another day.

Did you check your Sort settings ?

Some things you could try though.
Create a new Firefox Profile.
Load into the Profile only Fast Dial.
Create a few cells
And then see if you encounter the same problems

I am not that familiar with XMarks, but it might be worth seeing what happens if you disable xmarks in your current problematic Profile.

I guess what we have to do is to try and eliminate as many elements as possible to try and discover where the problem is coming from

Many thanks

Chiaro,

The "sort" setting *seem* to have been the last piece of the puzzle. Just getting on, now, so we will see how it goes throughout the afternoon, for me. When I tried to change the sort settings yesterday FD wouldn't let me access anything via the right-click, alternate-context menu, so changing anything was out of the equation, unless there is a different way to access that menu I am unaware of.

So, to summarize, all *appears* to be back to normal. Your help, and suggestions have been invaluable in resolving my issues. I take back MOST of the bad things I said about the upgrade to 2.23b1. I say only *most* because, it seems that the upgrade changed those of my settings that caused ALL of my problems. Clearly *I* did not. All I did was "allow" the upgrade.

Perhaps, with future upgrades, care can be taken with the formulation of the code so as NOT to alter existing settings.

Again, thank you, profusely, for all of your assistance.

Jazz

P.S. If ANYthing else goes wrong I reserves the right to again say bad things about the upgrade, and return here to complain about it!

This is good news.

It would seem in some way that your Fast Dial/Bookmarks settings got altered in some way.

Good that you persevered !

Maybe now is a good time to back up your present profile with FEBE

The most 9mportant thing that you must be aware of iis this

I have had this occur three times and have always resolved through reloading bookmarks and in some cases resetting the home page in bookmarks.

A pleasure.
Glad we got there in the end.

Many thanks
