Idk why they're doing this, because FD has way more features and there're a couple of addons going to become superfluous...
here you can see the "new tab" feature.
I hope FD continues as a functional and superior addon, this "new tab" ist just annoying!

I use Fx 14 nightly x64 and the switch "show fastdial in blank tabs" doesn't work
Version 4.2.1 on AMO solves the preferences quesion.
With 4.2.1 you will be able to toggle your preferences in relation to the new Tab.
So the manual fix that was suggested to you here can now be removed, as this question is now resolved within Fast Dial
