FD confuses Foxmarks?
kmc Thu, 08/28/2008 - 20:28
I use Foxmarks which is an online bookmark synchronizer. Anytime I made a change to FD, e.g., options in preferences, refresh all, etc., Foxmarks thinks there's a modification in bookmarks which will prompt a synchronization afterward. So, what did FD do to bookmarks? I'm using:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1a2pre) Gecko Minefield/3.1a2pre - Build ID: 20080828155133
# Fast Dial 2.1
# Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 2.1.0.12
Thanks

foxmarks detects a change because when u modify the properties of a thumbnail in fd the bookmark is updated..
foxmarks will synchronize the changes with their site thats all.
nothing harmful
im sure there is a setting in foxmarks to change when foxmarks should synchronize

I use Foxmarks to sync my home and 2 separate work PCs. I maintain separate Fast Dial pages between home and work. The new Fast Dial modification to save bookmarks in folders plays hell with Foxmarks; the 3 PCs are now continually replicating copies of the bookmarks as each machine gets an update. I think it's finally settled out with 3 copies of all the bookmarks. I'd really like to know how to have Foxmarks skip a particular directory when synchronizing or have an option in Fast Dial to NOT store the thumbnails/bookmarks in a folder.

Please could you clarify exactly what you mean by this ?

this may have something to do with that other post "bookmarks out of control and multiplying"
maybe the guy also has foxmarks, so when it synchronises between PCs, with different Fast Dial pages, using one foxmarks account - this is the result..
i think there are 2 possible ways to fix this:
have 2 separate foxmarks account, one home one work
or see if you can get telega to make the bookmark feature an option in the preferences

On each of the 3 machines on which Fast Dial is installed, I now have copies of all the bookmarks from the other 2 machines plus the bookmarks I had on that original machine. So the Fast Dial bookmarks from the 3 machines are now combined into one giant bookmark list and shared between the 3 machines. I exacerbated the problem by attempting to modify the bookmarks on one of the machine; this started another round of Foxmarks furiously copying and syncing the FD bookmarks on all the machines.
Long story short; don't touch your Fast Dial bookmarks (once they've stopped syncing) if using Foxmarks.

An obvious 3rd option; have a preference in Fast Dial which allows the user not to store the Fast Dial bookmarks in a folder.

"obvious 3rd option... " - yes this is what i meant

Thanks for your long clarification.
Very helpful
Sounds really complex...

Saw it on Mozilla Foxmarks
Really a must have ! It works perfectly between my home PC and my Mac at work. The Sync Profiles system works good too, and in my mind it is the most important part of this add-on : so I can use, modify, delete ad so on my bookmarks at home as at work, but on my computer at work, me and my collegues only see my "bookmarks for work", and not my personnal ones.

The first of the "possible ways" suggested isn't really a functional proposal, as it disrupts the reason to use Foxmarks on multiple machines in the first place - not having to manually add bookmarks to each PC or otherwise sync the bookmarks. The "3rd option" that was proposed is close to something that might actually work.
I use computer profiles in Foxmarks so that some links that I have on my home PC are not synced with my work PC, but the rest are. For example, I read my friends blogs' at home but not at work. But I frequently consult my list of Windows XP "fixes" both at home and at work. The former folder doesn't get synced to the work profile while the latter does.
Given this feature of Foxmarks, it would seem that the most direct "fix" to this problem would be to let users specify in which folder they want bookmarks saved. For example, I could set my work PC to save them in "Fast Dial 1" and my home PC to save them in "Fast Dial 2". I could then set the Foxmarks profiles to only download the bookmarks in one of the two folders depending on the PC, which would allow me to keep my start pages different.
In fact, even if I let Foxmarks sync the bookmars on both PCs, setting each of them to use different folders would avoid the problem I'm currently experiencing where Fast Dial forces me to have the same start page on every PC.

Submitted by beanbag on Mon, 09/15/2008 - 04:27I'm another one with the same problem here. Ever since upgrading to 2.x, I've had nothing but issues and I'm getting to the point where I no longer care to use FD, however perhaps somebody can help me fix it before I delete it for good.
I have the following scenario........
I use two PC's. One at work and the other at home. Since I do home working I use Foxmarks to synchronise my bookmarks between the two PC's. No problem.
I also use FD on both PC's, but with different links. Since my work PC has my work FD's and my home PC has personal FD's.
Since installing 2.x, everything has been a mess. FD seems to mess up my FD links and I'm looking thumbnails and I can't get it work properly.
With 1.x there were never any issues, so why did the FD developers change the way the links are stored? It's a total mess and an absolute disaster!!!
Please can you revert to the original way FD stored it's settings......
