Fast Dial Version 2.15-6 (NOT 2.15 beta 6)
chiaroscuro Fri, 12/19/2008 - 15:20
_______________________________________________________________
It could I think be argued that Fast Dial Version 2.15-6 (NOT 2.15 beta 6) is a superior Version of Fast Dial to 2.15 beta 5 or 7 or 8.
It pre-dates Fast Dial 2.15 beta 5 in spite of it's number.
This Version if you want was a direct developement from Fast Dial 2.14 with bugs being resolved and lots of detailed improvements being made in Preferences
So it was a work-in-progess Version being developed by telega, mafi0z, and myself
It differs from v2.14 in so much that there is no longer a search bar
---
I am very attached to this Version and would like to make it better known.
The main reason for wanting to share this Version is to show the excellent Preferences and Properties Menus

Bugs
There are a number of bugs, but this Version is still useable
Bug 1.
Hit the FD toolbar button and you get a copy of the root with a back cell
Solution don't use the FD button.
This is not noticeable on a normal Firefox boot up.
Bug 2
If you select in Preferences, in "open in", other than default or current Tab, the back cell will not show in any folder.
Bug 3
If you run Tab Mix Plus with this Version the Home button ceases to work.
Bug 4
But not only to this Version, if you use IE Tab address bar ceases to function
---
Seem to be more important bugs in Ubuntu
Can't create Folder
Logos will not save
---
Improvements on 2.14
Autohide settings highly configurable by user in Preferences.
Includes the ability to disable Autohide.
Ability to load the back arrow of ones choice to the back arrow cell.
This is great. Makes one able to configure one's Fast Dial exactly to one's own wishes.
Add to Fast Dial in Main context Menu now works perfectly.
That is all folders are shown.
To save to the root folder click on the words "add to Fast Dial"
Perfect
---
Preferences
1. to select transparent as a colour, right click color setting.
This is a tremendous improvement. Set up your page in seconds. Watch it change in front of your eyes. Brilliant.
2. to clear any custom image right click on the the three dots ... and the image will be gone.
Fast. Useful.
3. in general/thumbnail one can increase the cell number simply by clicking on the small arrows. No longer a drop down menu with a maximum of 10.
This is very useful. Saves messing around typing in numbers and making mistakes.
---
You will also notice a small help button top right, as well as a Fast Dial logo bottom right.
This was all work-in-progress to improve Support.

Many thanks

Re: Fast Dial Version 2.15-6 (NOT 2.15 beta 6)
Submitted by sjdvda on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 04:38I don't understand why telega is so determined in removing the preferences, as MP and I wrote in the Wikipedia article: "Customization is one of the key features in Fast Dial, the extension allows for custom bookmark images, the changing of logo sizes, different logo opacity levels, the ability to drag-and-drop thumbnails to reorder them and the adding of bookmarks via the right-click menu or the Firefox bookmark manager.". Without the "Preferences" menu, more than half of these options are removed. It's really annoying to make changes in about:config every time a want to. I can do it, you can do it, but telega can't expect the average Fast Dial user to make changes in about:config. This may cause people to turn to other alternatives such as Speed Dial.

Mmmm...
Have not tried those things yet...
The lack of Preferences has put me off that Version.
---
Maybe if a full Preferences was included again in 2.15 beta 5, as well as full Properties. then the result would be a really useful Version.
I have made the suggestion that one could possibly after setting up Preferences, save the resulting settings as a Theme, and name.
This would help integrate Preferences and Themes.
Are we describing a new Version ? :-)
Re: Fast Dial Version 2.15-6 (NOT 2.15 beta 6)
Submitted by sjdvda on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 05:03The perfect version would be one with all the features of 2.15 Beta 5 and the Preferences from 2.15-6. The ability to save the preferences as themes would be great (I don't know any CSS!!). The biggest problem now is to convince telega that the "Preferences" box is really useful!

I like this site!
(and your suggestions!)
I imagine a fast dial where everything is a preference, and universally exportable!
(also an advanced menu in my imaginary version!)

Re: Fast Dial Version 2.15-6 (NOT 2.15 beta 6)
Submitted by Pedro Lino on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 06:47This version is absolutely perfect. I had a problem with the missing address but uninstalled IETab and everything is working now.
Since I don't have a third button or mouse wheel in my laptop I think I can not use many of the new features in 15beta5.
One more vote for keeping preferences!
BTW could you make shift (or ctrl, alt, win) and left click on the fast dial toolbar button open fastdial on a new tab (as it does with middle click?)
One more thing: if you open a link in a new tab (unless you duplicate) you start a new history in any browser so Bug 2 is not a bug.
Thank you for this fantastic build. I'm definitely replacing 2.11 and keeping this one!!!

Submitted by dimidimi on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 07:47Wow! 2.15-6 is indeed great! Thanks so much for making it available!
One thing I noticed is that it not possible anymore to use empty cells a separators. Here’s what I mean by that:
On my 2.11 FD main page (a 5 x 5 setup) I was using some empty cells as separators between some logical groups of links. In 2.15-6 it looks like empty cells cannot be moved and/or rearranged.
Not that this is a problem (I have already kept this version in favor of 2.11), I just want to know if this is how 2.15-6 was designed ;-)

Yes you are absolutely right about this.
It is very frustrating
All cells have to be next to one another.
The only way round it would be to load a transparent blank cell to some cells to give the impression of space.
But it is not very satisfactory.
Here is a link to a blank cell that you could use to hide a cell
Not that this is a problem (I have already kept this version in favor of 2.11), I just want to know if this is how 2.15-6 was designed ;-)
Yes it was desigend this way.
Not sure why.
Maybe linked to the Sort function
Not helpful for the user.
Especially as one cannot disable Sort

Thanks for the 'blank' cell! It is a good workaround, but still it is not very useful that you cannot arrange cells anyway you like. In 2.11 I remember I was able to switch places between two non-neighboring cells. In 2.15-6 cells you can only switch position between neighboring cells. But anyway is it great that we have Preferences back :-)
Is it possible to have different number of columns and rows for each FD page? If I remember correctly in 2.11 I was able to define 'folder' pages with dimensions (rows x columns) being different to those of the main page.

Somehow I missed seeing your post before.
Apologies
I don't understand why telega is so determined in removing the preferences, as MP and I wrote in the Wikipedia article: "Customization is one of the key features in Fast Dial, the extension allows for custom bookmark images, the changing of logo sizes, different logo opacity levels, the ability to drag-and-drop thumbnails to reorder them and the adding of bookmarks via the right-click menu or the Firefox bookmark manager.". I agree with every word.
Most especially with:
Customization is one of the key features in Fast Dial.
Thank you for your great post !
---
It's really annoying to make changes in about:config every time
Could not agree more.
There is no harm in saving settings in about:config.
But why not do it by using a menu as an intermediary.
To expect the user to do it manually is somehow denying the the user right to benefit from the programming.
This as you say is most annoying.

Hi and thanks for a great add-on.
Thank you for your post.
Please understand that this Version was posted primarily so that users could compare this Version and it's use of Preferences to the present 2.15b5 (2.15) which no longer has Preferences
Have you tried this other Version ?
---
How do I hide the Fast Dial cells' borders? I.e. I only want to have the logo and nothing else visible.
Select transparent for Preferences/Appearance/Thumbnail/Border
I will try and address your other questions later
Many thanks

OK, thanks. I can make everything but the favorite icon disappear using this menu. Also, this menu could be clarified by adding "Mouse over" and "Mouse out" titles for the color groups.

See Favicon.
PS. I switched back to 2.15 so I'm not able to give feedback on 2.15-6 anymore.

I have the same problem with the favicons.
That's why I've temporarily gone back to 2.11 (my original favourite)

ALOT!
Having a play now!
Two comments, take it lightly cause I don't think it was liked any way.
But I loved the Google Search Bar, there again I could have Google as a cell.
and I cant get our own logo "Userlogo" to stay with cell, so to speak,
Just a picture of page that I save to FastDial.
Excellent job to you all!
Love how easy it is to set up, just drag and drop,
Cheers Chiaroscuro!

But the Preferences are so much better than 2.14.
And yes one can always make a dialling cell.

Are you saying that you can't use custom images at all ?
Are you in Ubuntu
There seem to be some problems running 2.15-6 in Ubuntu.
